Starting 2023 with determination, compassion, and Starting 2023 with determination, compassion, and hope. Made @cookwithfam’s kabob (yes, it looks like little 💩s) and @andybaraghani’s tachin - while it might not be the most beautiful display of food, it was delicious and comforting.

Cooking Iranian food has been one of the ways I (Jasmine) have been reconnecting to and sharing my culture. It has been nourishing for my body and emotions. This desire to reconnect has looked like experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes from amazing chefs to sharing food and stories with loved ones. It has also been emotional as people in Iran are losing loved ones who are fighting for a better and more just Iran.

Today marks 109 days (15 weeks) of protests in Iran and the people are continuing to fight for the fall of the Islamic Republic (IR). I am not an expert on the details of what goes on day-to-day in Iran, which is why I’ve shared some accounts you can follow below. I encourage you to continue supporting the people of Iran. Because Iranians inside of Iran continue to fight while supporters outside of Iran amplify what’s happening, we’ve seen some progress!

The UN Human Rights Council has established a fact finding mission to hold the IR accountable for human rights abuses.

IR has been removed from the UN Commission on the Status of Women.

Sanctions have been placed on regime officials.

#mahsaamini has been used 1.6 million times on Instagram

These are amazing outcomes and there’s still more work to be done.

To the people of Iran: We hear you. We see you. We support you.

12/21/22 is Shabeh Yalda, the winter solstice, whi 12/21/22 is Shabeh Yalda, the winter solstice, which is an ancient Persian holiday. It is celebrated on the longest night of the year to usher in the light over darkness as the days become longer. This celebration feels more important this year given the 90+ days of continuous protests in Iran.

Families come together on this night to light candles, enjoy various dishes, and read poetry. It’s also tradition to have pomegranate, watermelon, and nuts with dried fruit.

Deseeding pomegranate in preparation for Shabeh Yalda felt especially therapeutic this year. It was like a mindfulness activity where I was present with what was in front of me. I used this time to appreciate those who are fighting for a better Iran. To those who use their platforms to amplify Iranian voices and rally more to support the cause - merci (thank you). To those on the streets of Iran, risking your lives to stand up to oppression - I appreciate you, see you, and support you.

@cookforiran continues to raise awareness for the Iranian people and what they are fighting for through our culture and food. You can show your support by:

☀️ Amplifying Iranian voices.
☀️ Signing petitions.
☀️ Going to protests.

Join us in observing this night as we welcome brighter days.

On my way home from a protest in NYC, I found myse On my way home from a protest in NYC, I found myself wanting comfort. I wanted something from my Iranian culture to help settle my emotions. I also wanted to bake something because it’s an activity I enjoy doing. It feels like a mindfulness practice for me in some ways. So I made @thecaspianchef's Naan-e Keshmeshi (raisin cookies) and shared them with some friends.

Since September 16, 2022, the people of Iran have protested daily for their basic human rights and freedom. Thousands of people have been arrested. People - including children - have been killed at the hands of the Islamic Republic.

@cookforiran is raising awareness for the Iranian people and what they are fighting for through our culture and food. If you love food, care for equality, or just want to show your support, please continue to:

To the brave women, girls, and people of Iran - thank you for your courage and resilience. We hear you. We see you. We support you.
